Many of our emotions are stored in our gut. We have all heard the sayings "butterflies in the stomach", "sick to the stomach", "gut feeling". Just a little stress and anxiety can often result in a stomach upset. Negative emotions stored in our gut have a profound effect on our physical and emotional health which in turn has a damaging effect on our quality of life. Along with causing significant emotional damage, stored emotions can also distort our physical tissues, resulting in poor digestion and health. I.B.S and Chrone’s Disease, to name but a few, are mainly a result from stored emotional trauma. These stored emotions literally fester and prevent us from having meaningful, lasting relationships and can also have a great impact on the type of people we attract because of low self esteem.
Because of our conditioning we are taught to suppress our feelings and we spend most of our lives doing so. This stuck energy cannot go anywhere, it remains stuck within our bodies where it can create disease, tension and all manner of mental and physical illnesses.
Wilhelm Reich, M.D. showed how this ‘emotional armouring' creates distortions in our bodies as well as our behaviour and no one is free of this. Reich came up with the term 'emotional armour', which he defined as a bodily expression of the conflict of our basic human needs, desires and authentic feelings with the unnatural attitudes and conditioning imposed upon us. Armouring forms when we hold back or repress our natural expression ie grief, anger and hurt, to conform to the expectations of family and society and by doing so shapes our character. Armouring is a way of protecting ourselves from the pain of not expressing those parts of ourselves.
Emotional release is a healing mechanism which enables us to become more whole. In other words, it can also be seen as an integration of our true self. Whether you experience a traumatic event or develop negative feelings over a period of time, by releasing these emotions you can achieve greater well-being and live a more positive, productive life.
Arvigo® therapy often plays a part in releasing these emotions. I have found clients to experience emotional release during the abdominal massage or at home afterwards. It is a great healing process and many clients feel a huge sense of unburdening or ‘letting go’, an important step to tackling any physical ailment.
Releasing trapped emotions is the key to both our mental and physical wellbeing. Without some sort of emotional release therapy, we will be forever stuck and controlled by our emotions.
